Scotland’s Hibernian FC Adopts Bamboo Shin Guards

Legend Soccer, a purveyor of bamboo shin guards and other sustainable, high-quality products, is proud to partner with Hibernian FC, a prominent soccer team in the Scottish Professional Football League. As Hibernian FC strives to become the most eco-friendly club in Scotland, the move to bamboo shin guards was a natural choice. Learn more about the club and its collaboration with Legend Soccer.

Known by fans as “Hibs” or “the Hibees,” Hibernian FC is a Scottish soccer club. They play in the Scottish Premiership, which represents the top tier of the Scottish Professional Football League, or SPFL.

A club with a long, proud history, Hibernian FC was founded in 1875. Since their inception, they have taken the Scottish league championship four times.

They play their home matches at Easter Road in Edinburgh. The stadium has a capacity of just over 20,000, making it Scotland’s fifth-largest soccer stadium.

“When the opportunity came for us to partner with Hibernian, we couldn’t turn it down,” said Legend Soccer co-founder Roland Benedict. “A club that is steeped in football history is the perfect opportunity to grow our brand and bring sustainable, high-performance equipment to the SPFL.”

The “Greenest Football Club” in Scotland

Hibernian FC has taken on an initiative to be the most sustainable (or “greenest”) club in the SPFL. This made the collaboration between Legend and Hibernian a natural choice.

Here are some highlights of the club’s ongoing efforts to go green:

Energy Consumption

The entirety of the club’s energy needs are currently met by renewable sources.

    Food, Packaging, and Waste

All match day waste is recycled. Additionally, single-use plastic has been removed from the stadium. This includes everything from straws and stirrers to sauce sachets and food containers. Vegan dining options are available at kiosks throughout Easter Road, and even more plant-based meals will be incorporated into the stadium’s offerings.

      Travel

The current club’s fleet will be transitioned to electric vehicles, which will represent a 3 percent overall reduction of the club’s CO2 output. The club also aims to reduce matchday attendees who arrive by car by 48 percent. This will be done through strategic travel partnerships. Electric charging stations will be added throughout Easter Road, and free matchday parking for all electric vehicles will further incentivize fans.

        Sustainable Partnerships

The club’s adoption of Legend's shinguards represents one way they seek to implement sustainable procurement policies.

The Move to Bamboo Shin Guards

As part of Hibernian FC’s collaboration with Legend Soccer, both first-team squads (men and women) will be provided with bamboo shin guards. The product will also eventually be available for purchase in their club store.

Embracing bamboo shin guards means the club can even further reduce its reliance on plastic. In addition to the eco-friendly benefits, the shin guards also provide a minimal profile, optimal protection, light weight, and natural antimicrobial properties.

“Legend is at the forefront of bringing a sustainable approach to the beautiful game,” said Benedict. “Partnering with the greenest club in Scotland was the easiest decision we have made.”
